Answer to the past situation question: According to USA Hockey rule 612b, when penalties occur simultaneously, there will be a last play faceoff, so the faceoff will be in A1’s defensive zone, eventhough Team A will be on the power play.
Situation question
Player A1 and Player B1 receive penalties at the exact same time with play inside A1’s defensive zone. A1 receives a minor while B1 receives a double minor. Where does the faceoff go (USA Hockey rules)?
Half-Shield Visor for Officials
Rule 501c: Each official is required to wear a black hockey helmet, with chin strap fastened, and a half-shield visor properly attached to their helmets
With last year’s addition of the half visor as a required piece of equipment for USA Hockey officials, I thought I’d talk about it a little.
Personally, I don’t mind the rule, since I have been wearing a half shield since I started officiating. I don’t think I could go out, especially in higher level games without a visor. I prefer the Oakley Pro Straight Visor. It offers great visibility and protection. I don’t like the bigger one due to decreased airflow on my face. The only complaints I have heard about it are about the anti-fog coating coming off. I have been using it for years; my last one I had for 4 or 5 years, and it just started coming off at the end of this past season.
Which visor does everyone else use, and why do you like it? Post in the comments section
About this blog
This blog has been created as a way to discuss life as an ice hockey official. We will discuss rules, situations, general information about officiating. It is my goal to create conversations and help officials learn from others.
A little about me before we start: I have been officiating for the past 14 years, recently completing my 11th USA Hockey season. I started out my officiating career in college as an Intramural Roller Hockey referee, eventually becoming certified as a USA Hockey Inline Official, working games in the Western Collegiate Roller Hockey League. After having played ice hockey for years up through college, I became a USA Hockey official, working games in the local youth league as well as adult leagues. Since, then I have worked the youth championships every year, as well as the state championships most years. I have also worked games in the Pacific Collegiate Hockey Association, as well as USA Hockey Junior games in the Western States Hockey League.
I am by no means saying I am the best official out there. I just enjoy officiating and would love to pass on my experiences to others, and, hopefully, bring others together to share their experiences.
